We owned the land, we had a Resource Consent and we had a Building Permit. We had taken a recommendation from an old friend, Jeff Henderson from Timaru, to consider building the house from shipping containers. This was before the earthquakes in Christchurch which has resulted in the prolific use of containers to provide bars, restaurants, offices, etc, so we now wish to take credit for the ReStart Mall, Cafe Metro, and a host of other businesses using containers to enable them to get back into business.
We had an Architech (Jason Mills from Pivnice), a Geotech Engineer (David Bell), Builder (Ian Eilken), Excavation Contractor (Alan Hemsley), Engineering firm to prepare the containers (Mark Bohan from Containers Direct), Craning company (Alan Low from Titan Cranes) Plumber (Adam from Laser Plumbing), Electrician (Corrie from Laser Electrical), plus a number of other contractors whose photos will appear on this blog. We have been blessed to have such a great team of “good buggers” who have found solutions, not problems, and helped us realise our dream.
The photos below give some idea of the enormity of the task of building on a steepish slope on a property that one “expert” recommended that we did not purchase. A dream taker who soon became redundant!!
